Which path fits your question?
Start with the outcome you want to understand. A cosmetic ingredient claim and a treatment question need different evidence.

| Your question | What to do with the evidence |
|---|---|
| More hairs coming out after illness, surgery or another change? | This may be shedding; tell a clinician about the timing, because the cause changes what to expect. |
| Gradual pattern thinning or receding hairline? | Seek a cause-specific assessment. AAD describes minoxidil as one treatment that can help some early hair loss; it is different from a cosmetic peptide blend. |
| A new patch, pain or scalp rash? | Arrange a clinical assessment instead of choosing a fullness serum from a shopping list. |
| Only seeking fuller-looking styling? | A cosmetic scalp comparison may help compare exact bottles, but appearance claims should not be read as regrowth evidence. |
Different patterns need different answers
Shedding after a major physical change, gradual hereditary thinning and patchy loss do not share one cause or one treatment. AAD emphasizes diagnosing the cause before selecting treatment and notes that some hair may regrow without treatment once the trigger resolves.
What the narrow peptide trial shows
The Gly-Pro-Ile-Gly-Ser trial enrolled 22 Japanese men with androgenetic alopecia and compared lotions with and without that peptide for four months. It reported a higher change in thick-hair proportion and better blinded appearance ratings in the peptide group. This is a specific peptide, population and vehicle; it is not a head-to-head test of our cosmetic scalp serum cohort or proof of benefit for other hair-loss causes.

If the scalp is dry, itchy, flaky or inflamed
Itch and flakes can reflect dandruff, a reaction to a hair product, psoriasis, eczema or an infection. AAD notes that persistent or severe dandruff and scalp symptoms can require a dermatologist to identify the cause. The AAD guidance reviewed here does not recommend a peptide serum as treatment for those conditions.
- Notice whether symptoms began after a new product; stop a suspected irritant and seek help if the reaction persists.
- A dandruff shampoo may help ordinary dandruff, but a painful, severe or persistent rash needs an accurate diagnosis.
- Mention hair shedding or patches alongside itch or inflammation during an evaluation.
Keep treatment and appearance separate
AAD describes minoxidil as one option that can stimulate growth or limit further loss for some causes, with results taking months and continued use needed to retain benefit. That does not make it suitable for every person. Use the cosmetic comparison only for a fuller-looking-hair shopping goal.

Common questions
Does a peptide scalp serum regrow hair?
A narrow trial found changes for one peptide lotion in 22 men with pattern loss, but this does not establish regrowth for other commercial peptide blends or causes.

Is shedding the same as permanent hair loss?
No. AAD distinguishes shedding from hair loss and notes that both can coexist; evaluation helps identify the cause.
