Regulatory Status: Topical GHK-Cu is sold as a cosmetic ingredient. Injectable GHK-Cu is not approved: it was placed in FDA 503A Category 2 in 2023, removed in April 2026 after the nomination was withdrawn, and is scheduled for advisory committee review before the end of February 2027. Removal from Category 2 is not authorization to compound.

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring peptide in your body, it's found in blood plasma, saliva, and urine. Discovered in the 1970s, it binds to copper and has remarkable effects on tissue repair, collagen production, and gene expression. It's popular both as a topical skincare ingredient and as an injectable peptide in the biohacking community.

How It Works

GHK-Cu works by modulating gene expression, essentially telling your cells to behave younger:

Collagen & elastin: Stimulates production of the proteins that keep skin firm and elastic.

Anti-inflammatory: Reduces chronic inflammation associated with aging.

Antioxidant: Helps protect against oxidative damage.

Wound healing: Attracts immune cells and stimulates tissue repair.

Gene expression: Affects over 4,000 genes, generally "resetting" cells toward a younger state.

Levels of GHK-Cu decline significantly with age, you have about 60% less at age 60 than at age 20.

Why this rating

There is real human evidence here, which puts GHK-Cu ahead of most peptides marketed for skin, and it is weaker than the marketing implies. The most-cited study, a 12-week trial in 71 women, was a 2002 conference presentation rather than a peer-reviewed publication, and much of the supporting literature is written by the peptide's discoverer, who also founded companies selling it. An independent 2025 review concluded that published data on GHK skin permeability and effectiveness remains insufficient. Cosmetic endpoints are also unusually placebo-sensitive, since moisturizing anything for 12 weeks improves how it looks.

Why this rating

GHK-Cu stimulates collagen synthesis in fibroblast culture and improves healing in animal wound models, and the mechanism has been characterized since the 1980s. We could not identify a controlled human wound-healing trial. The cosmetic evidence does not transfer, because looking better after twelve weeks of cream is a different endpoint from closing a wound.

Why this rating

Every piece of human GHK-Cu evidence involves topical application to skin. There are no human trials of injected GHK-Cu for any purpose, and the injectable form is the one the FDA placed in of its list in 2023. The gene-expression claims used to justify systemic use come from database analysis by the compound's discoverer, not from measuring anything in a person. Copper also competes with zinc absorption and accumulates, so chronic systemic dosing is not a neutral act.
