Skin & Appearance

Visible aging, skin health

What is Skin & Appearance?

Skin aging is driven primarily by UV damage (photoaging) and glycation. The most effective anti-aging interventions are daily sunscreen (preventing damage) and retinoids (promoting cell turnover). Beyond these, vitamin C, collagen peptides, and advanced treatments like microneedling offer additional benefits.

Your skin is the most visible marker of aging. While some decline is inevitable, most of what we call "aging skin" is actually photoaging, damage from UV radiation that accumulates over time.

The single most effective anti-aging intervention is daily sunscreen. After that, retinoids (retinol or prescription tretinoin) have the strongest evidence for reversing existing damage and preventing new damage.

This protocol covers the evidence-based hierarchy of skincare interventions.

Why Skin & Appearance Matters

Up to 90% of visible skin aging comes from sun exposure. This damage is cumulative and largely preventable. Starting photoprotection early has massive returns.

Beyond aesthetics, skin health reflects systemic health. Interventions that improve skin (antioxidants, reduced sugar) also improve metabolic and cardiovascular markers.

Quick Wins to Start Today

Use SPF 30+ sunscreen daily (even if cloudy)

Stay hydrated (skin needs water)

Reduce sugar (glycation ages skin)

Use a silk or satin pillowcase (reduces mechanical aging)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best anti-aging skincare ingredient?

Sunscreen is #1 (prevention). For treatment, retinoids (retinol or tretinoin) have the strongest evidence. They increase cell turnover, boost collagen, and reduce fine lines. Start with low concentrations and work up.

Do I need expensive skincare products?

No. The key ingredients (sunscreen, retinol, vitamin C) are available at all price points. What matters is consistency and correct application, not brand. Drugstore products can be equally effective.

What is GHK-Cu?

GHK-Cu (copper peptide) is a naturally occurring peptide that may promote wound healing and collagen synthesis. It has promising research for skin regeneration. Available as topical serums or more advanced applications.

Does collagen supplementation work?

Oral collagen peptides (hydrolyzed collagen) have emerging evidence for skin hydration and elasticity. Typical dose: 5-10g daily. Results take 8-12 weeks. Not magic, but may offer modest benefits.
