Is BMI really a useful measure?

BMI is a useful population-level screening tool but has limitations for individuals. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. A muscular athlete may have "overweight" BMI but excellent health. Conversely, someone with normal BMI can have dangerous visceral fat ("skinny fat"). Body composition testing (DEXA) is more informative.

What about the "obesity paradox" in older adults?
